Recently a newspaper editorial had a subject tag line, “Privatize the VA now.” which confused me! The VA is an organization that extends far beyond the Veterans Health Administration which appeared to be the focus of the editorial. As an Air Force officer who served during the Korean War, I still carry my military life insurance, I paid for my graduate degrees with the GI Bill, and I purchased my first home with a GI Loan. These are just a few of the many benefits provided to over 21 million veterans like myself who honorably served their country and are eligible for some level of VA service. Those services are as diverse as health care, burial and cemetery activities, pensions, survivor benefits, training and rehab, life insurance, vocational training, just to mention a few.

Apparently the intent of the editorial was to address the Veterans Health Administration’s funding problems, although it was not clearly stated as such in the concluding statement.
If one wants to address that issue, there is a simple and beneficial solution. Develop a ten year phase out plan which converts the VA Hospital and Clinic facilities into university and private sectors teaching hospitals, while simultaneously expanding the Medicare system to absorb and accommodate the unique health requirements of the veteran population.
Such an approach would release an estimated 120,000 health care professionals into the private sector or retirement. Not only would this provide a much needed influx of health care professionals into the private sector, but it would be an additional benefit to the VA cost issue by the elimination of future pension funding for those health care professionals who would ultimately be released from the federal retirement system.
When a politician or a responsible public source makes a statement like “Privatize the VA now” or desires to kill a treaty or bill, that kind of statement carries an obligation. It should be challenged, if the source makes a demand they also have to offer solutions or an alternative! Otherwise those critics and politicians are not even worth a dime a dozen!
